Week V Lesson 5 (Midterm)

Midterm had a rough start, Vacation went on for 2 weeks, then there's the Sport's festival activity in school. But still, we had managed to get some time to discuss some of the lesson.

1st topic is about Software Basics and Operation Systems, as explained by Miss Ashley;

Software comprises of computer programs, support modules and data modules. Software's are usually built to do a task, built by programmers by the use of coding.

Program, as what I understood are coded instructions for an auto performance on a specific task as well. I think, it's basically the same as software the only thing is, software is much more broader than program.

We had tackle as well about the software system process, on how it works. It uses translators, translators basically convert instructions from a high-level language into machine language. Machine language on the other hand is the only language that can be understood by a computer's microprocessor's. Very complicated.. Lol.

Miss Ashley asked if a computer machine will work if there's no operating system, I think all of us, including me answered no.. but we're wrong. It will still work, which is very amazing.

Operating system or OS is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs.

It has been discussed that us, the end user commonly interact with the operating system when we are launching some programs, customizing the user interface, managing files, configuring equipmetns and getting help on some things that we don't understand on the computer process.

There are different types of Operating Systems, one of them is Single-user operating system which deals with one set of input devices. 2nd one is the Multi-user operating system that deals with the input, output and processing requests from many users. And lastly, Network operating system which basically provides communications and routing services and allow computers to share data, programs and peripheral devices.

Miss Ashley had provided some samples of operating system, of course we all know about Microsoft Windows, Apple's MacOS, Linux and etc.

Windows and Mac's both operating systems base their user interfaces on the graphical model originated at Xerox, PARC. Mac Os was developed several years before windows (a trivia has been given by Miss Ashley that Bill Gates, the CEO of Windows had stolen some ideas from Mac).

Unix, was developed in 1969 at AT&T's Bell Labs, this company had gained a good reputation for its dependability in multi-user environments.

Linux on the other hand, was developed in 1991, based on a version of the UNIX kernel called Minix. Considered to be a popular operating system for e-mail, web-servers and local area networks. Miss Ashley had shown us some pictures of different user interface of Linux operating system.

The last one is the "DOS", it stands for 'Disk Operating System'. Dos provides part of the operating system kernel for Windows versions 3.1 , 95, 98 and ME. Users rarely interact with DOS, because it is well hidden by the Windows graphical user interface. Miss Ashley told us that the UI of this OS looks like CMD.

That's the first topic for Midterm
